Letizia was standing on the ship with four women who appeared to be her retainers. Ferdinand brought his highbeast down beside them.
âLady Letizia... I am glad to see you well,â I said. âYou arenât hurt, are you?â
I dismounted the lion and went to approach her, but Angelica and Leonore, who had also descended to serve as my knights, held out their hands to stop me. Evidently, I wasnât allowed any closer.
âIs that you, Lady Rozemyne...?â Letizia asked, blinking. She hadnât recognized me at first because of my sudden growth spurt. âDunkelfelgerâs knights informed me of your rescue operations. They said you stole Ahrensbachâs foundation to save Lord Ferdinand and smote Lanzenave. I do not even know where to begin. It is all myââ
âLady Letizia,â Ferdinand interjected.
The girl stared up at him in utter shock. Her expression betrayed her relief, and the tension started draining from her body. âSo you are safe, Lord Ferdinand... When Lady Detlinde told me you had died, I was soââ
âI am only here now because you were able to reach Eckhart and Justus,â Ferdinand said. He was wearing a smile, but the intensity in his eyes made it clear that he was telling her to shut up.
Letizia must have noticed, as she immediately fell silent.
âRozemyne, who is now Aub Ahrensbach, knows everything about the incident,â Ferdinand continued. âNonetheless, she made the decision to rescue you.â
Letiziaâs surprise was once again directed at me. Her retainers wore the same look of astonishment. They must not have expected me to help the person who struck the first blow against Ferdinand. Or maybe they were just surprised that someone who had stolen a foundation was now showing compassion to a member of the previous archducal family.
âBut, Lord Ferdinand, I... I...â
âSay nothing of the matter until we are somewhere private,â Ferdinand replied. âIn fact, act as though nothing happened at all. Can I assume you will obey me this time?â
Letizia looked up at him, her face pale. Then she brought a trembling hand to her chest, squeezed it into a tight fist, and nodded. âI will. From the bottom of my heart, I am grateful for your and Lady Rozemyneâs consideration.â
âWe intend to close the gates so that no more Lanzenavian ships enter,â Ferdinand continued. âLady Letizia, return to the castle under guard and instruct your attendants to prepare somewhere in the grand hall for Dunkelfelgerâs knights to rest.â
âFerdinand, we just rescued Lady Letizia from imprisonment,â I said, unable to believe he was ordering her around already. âShe needs to rest before youââ
âShe has spent her time sitting still inside a ship. Should she not have more stamina than someone who was poisoned and a young woman who recently dyed a foundation and expelled the Lanzenavian invaders?â
âYou may be right in that regard, but please consider the emotional side of things.â
Ferdinand sneered at the very idea. Then, looking down at Letizia, he explained our situation. To restore some order to Ahrensbachâs disarrayed nobles, she needed to announce in her capacity as
